I think this is a good time to reignite the debate on whether Scotland should send its own team of athletes to the Olympics.
"Union Jack" McConnell said this week that Scottish sportsmen and women prefer to compete as part of Team GB as it gives them a greater opportunity to win medals in team events. While I think winning any medal at the Olympics is a laudable achievement, I also think McConnell makes a politically biased and unfounded argument. Scottish athletes only won 4 medals at the 2004 Olympics (2 gold and 2 silver). This is not because we are nation of sporting flops but more because we only send a handful of competitors to the games as part of a Great Britain team. If we had our own Team Scotland, we would be able to send far more Scots to compete at the Olympics. For every Scottish medalist, competing as part of Team GB, who says they don't want a separate Scottish team, there will be 100 young Scottish athletes who would give anything to represent Scotland at the Olympics. http://www.c-scot.org |
