Clyde 2 Celtic 1

Is this the greatest Cup shock in Scottish football history? I would say so. It is, in fact, the latest in a long line of embarrassing defeats in Cup competitions by Celtic over the last 10 years or so. In each of them, Celtic have held an advantage which was not available to Rangers against Berwick in 1967 - previously held up as the biggest shock ever. The extra time and penalties against Raith Rovers in 1994; the replay against Falkirk in 1997; the home match against Caley Thistle in 2000; the fortuitous refereeing in Celtic's favour against Clyde, and the ragtag nature of the opponents, in 2006.

If you go by betting odds it's the biggest cup shock ever. One betting exchange was offering odds of over 50/1 for Clyde to win and no football team has ever defied such long odds to win a match.

regrettably I decided against watching the game as I thought it would be an easy victory for the boys in green. When I heard the score I watched the highlights and was pleasantly surprised by how well Clyde did. Remember this was a team made entirely from public trials in the summer! Best of luck to the Bully Wee in the next round against Gretna!

I thought it was wonderful. I usually manage to avoid football, but I'm always happy to see the underdog win against the "big teams". Had anyone asked me before this weekend, I would have had to admit that I didn't even know that Clyde existed. Seriously, I had a vague notion that they were one of those teams of days gone by that had now vanished.

In fact I think I had only ever heard of them by way of the Matt McGinn thingy.

"there are two teams in Glasgow
called Partick Thistle and Clyde.
There also are two other teams
that in that town abide

their names I willnae mention
I don't carry tittle-tattle
and if you mention one afore the ither
it's bound to start a battle

............. " and I don't know how it continues

Good for Clyde! And how nice for Cumbernauld to have something to be happy about.

Ooh, and if the Clyde underdogs can do it .... perhaps Trinidad and Tobago?

Fortuitous refereeing in favour of Celtic? I think someone needs to have another look at Clyde's first goal, which was more offside than their 2 dissallowed goals. And their penalty for the foul committed outside the box, which eventually led to their 2nd goal. Yes, Du Wei should have been sent off, but it was never a penalty.

Celtic deserved to be knocked out because the team were awful but we certainly did not benefit from any bad refereeing decisions.

Well done to Clyde anyway.

I suggest you're viewing this with your own particular bias. If it had occurred at Celtic Park, and a Celtic player had been fouled in similar circumstances, you would have covered the North Stand in angry phlegm.

The reality is that Clyde had two disallowed goals - wrongly, as television replays proved - and Celtic should have had Du Wei sent off. Whether Clyde's first goal should have been disallowed is highly contentious and, again, would it have provoked cries of 'foul' if it had gone against Celtic at the other end of the field.

By any measure, Celtic could have been at least 3-0 down at HT and down to 10 men. This was indeed highly beneficial as it gave them a greater opportunity to retrieve the situation in the match. The fact they didn't take this opportunity is indeed their fault.
