We have our own 'Gaelic' games, such as shinty (similar to Irish hurling) and curling - oh and the 'Gaelic' games at the Highland Gatherings, too.... The rules etc are on the shinty official website.
http://shinty.com/composite.htm BTW - who said we 'disliked the Irish and their traditions?' Certainly not me - I merely question WHY so many Irish choose to post on 'Irish matters' on a Scots board... I've visited Ireland (south and North) many times and enjoyed most of the time I've spent there. Disliking Irish politics is not the same as disliking 'THE IRISH'.... |

My brother was a shinty player from schooldays. He wouldn't like to hear you state
QUOTE " however i am saddened to see such little interest in yer national games espicallt in shinty" Although a minority sport (like curling, or tossing the caber) it is a passion with many Scots, including my family. |

Hurling and shinty were a lot closer in the 1700's. Even 100 years ago the hurling stick 'hurley or caman' resembled closely a hockey stick and it was played more on the ground.
My experience of Gaelic games consist of being dragged out of class aged 9 and a hurley being put in my hands. The idea of blindly swinging a wooden club at a Cork savage did not appeal to me. I played Gaelic football for a few months but to be honest it did not appeal to me. I prefered rugby. Also I have issues with the GAA but Iets keep this a sporting thread. |

i can assure you i did not mean to insult in anyway i think it the finest of games! (and excuse my spelling i will have to reread my posts in future). i can easily believe that many scots are passionate about their national sport(s). and rightly so may i add!! it is a pity that such sports dont recieve more attention and coverage and espically support from governments or other such organisations!! like the gaa has done in ireland!! could you explain why such native sports have been over looked and why they have never taken off to a national level? |
