Yes 8-ball is normally with 12 or 15 balls..i prefer the 15 just cause it gives you more to do.. it can also be played with certain balls only being allowed in certain pockets...as can 9-ball... but i am not to clear on those rules.. and 9-ball is originally set up in the diamond shape you spoke of... and yes rack-em up is also used here.. and i am sure there are pretty much every concievable possibility of how to play pool..lol... with different tables..and pockets..lol..the list I am sure is endless...

as the balls will stay in there pocket..

Who said Pocket Pool was not a learned Sport eh?

I know it took years of practice for me to get it right.. lol
