Smoking

BBC News - Scotland tobacco display ban to be delayed

If it were down to me I would say ban it completely. Don't get me wrong, smoking is something I struggle with. I wish I could quit completely, but I find myself slipping back almost as often as I try to quit.

But I doubt I would bother if they made tobacco a lot more difficult to get a hold of.

Smokers often make the argument about the amount of money they bring in in taxation as opposed to the cost to the NHS in treating smoking related diseases. But what are the sums? Has anyone ever attempted to sit down and work this out? I doubt if they did there could be any net overall benefit whatsoever.

Anyway I think Scotland should go as far as to be the first country to introduce a full public smoking ban. If people still want to smoke, then let them do it in their houses, or their back gardens, but not on the streets, or anywhere else in public.

What caught my attention about this article though, was the argument made by the tobacco companies that Scotland didn't have the powers to introduce a display ban. This is something I think we should fix without delay.

It isn't just about making smoking less appealing to kids. It's about stigmatising smoking and making it less popular and less acceptable among the general public.

I'm sure there are some people who may feel such intervention is an infringement of their liberties, but people like this are literally a dying breed these days lol.

I just wish I had never encountered the stuff. It's an evil, vile, filthy and unhealthy habit, which confers no benefit whatsoever (other than poverty and ill-health) on those who indulge in it.

I gave up a 30 cigarette a day habit just over 4 yrs ago at the age of 38. I stopped and started for many months but with the aid of patches I finally did it.
Just remember two things- you are not alone and it is worth it.

Its great to go to a pub or a restaurant and not breathe in smoke. Back in the 80s when I used to commute to college the buses smelled like mouldy ashtrays. Its funny how it was so normal back then and how it would be totally unacceptable nowadays.

Well I've been off the fags for 4 1/2 weeks now. What did it for me, other than being sick of them, was I bought one of those electronic cigarette things (Skycig). So now if I have a relapse, and am gagging for a fag, I just use this. Most of the time I forget about it. But If I have a few beers or something, which is when I gag most, I have a few puffs on this and it sorts me out. If anything it's even better than real fags, since it has some real neat flavours too.

Anyway I just thought I would mention it, in case anyone else has struggled as hard as me.

The government also makes money off them.

Congratulations, I know it can be hard.

I stopped just over 4 years ago... one morning I lit one up and took a couple of puffs and then
gave it to the hubby as I just couldn't stand it...he is still smoking but not as many.

I did find that when I tried to stop with the patches I did manage it for a little while but
always sucumbed eventually.

So I really hope it works out well for you

Having a positive mental attitude is the ONLY way forward.

If you seriously want to stop then you will without any assistance ie patches, hypnosis, reduction etc.

For those that claim they cannot stop its because they dont want to stop.

Personally I am not a smoker, never have been but I relate this to alcohol and I was able to stop it after months if not years of deliberating upon it. It is always the usual, oh just one more day, maybe next month, definately next week.

No, I just decided there and then NO MORE and to date it is working with no assistance. So if I can stop alcohol and my 18lts a week then you too can stop your excessive smoking.
