Edinburgh By-election results: SNP hold city centre seat
Alasdair Rankin beat Conservative candidate Iain McGill into second place with 1368 votes to 1264 in the final count.
The Liberal Democrats crashed to last place.
The seat became vacant following Councillor David Beckett's decision to leave to study at Harvard University.
Mr Rankin said: "I am honoured to be elected to represent Edinburgh's historic City Centre.
"My priority will be to support the people of this area.
"With the local authority elections now under a year away, I and the rest of the SNP will be working hard to win the support of people across this great city."
SNP MSP Marco Biagi said that the result was testament to the SNP's hard work in government and commitment to the city of Edinburgh.
He added: "This is a great result for the SNP and shows that our momentum is still continuing from the Scottish Parliament elections in May.
"Our positive message and positive vision for the future has been backed by the people of Edinburgh."

Good result, it's to be expected that the Brit nat Scotsman will say 'HOLD' rather than win as if we had them at our throats rather than simply beaten.
