A national anthem for Scotland.

Burns : the magic word.

I've come to the thought that

"For a' that, and a' that".

would be the the national anthem for Scotland that would please all and set the tone for the future Scotland we wish to build.

‪5 Hand Reel : A Man's A Man For A' That‬‏ - YouTube

1.
Is there for honest poverty
That hings his head, an' a' that?
The coward slave, we pass him by --
We dare be poor for a' that!
For a' that, an' a' that,
Our toils obscure, an' a' that,
The rank is but the guinea's stamp,
The man's the gowd for a' that.

2.
What though on hamely fare we dine,
Wear hoddin grey, an' a' that?
Gie fools their silks, and knaves their wine --
A man's a man for a' that.
For a' that, an' a' that,
Their tinsel show, an' a' that,
The honest man, tho' e'er sae poor,
Is king o' men for a' that.

3.
Ye see yon birkie ca'd 'a lord,'
Wha struts, an' stares, an' a' that?
Tho' hundreds worship at his word,
He's but a cuif for a' that.
For a' that, an' a' that,
His ribband, star, an' a' that,
The man o' independent mind,
He looks an' laughs at a' that.

4.
A prince can mak a belted knight,
A marquis, duke, an' a' that!
But an honest man's aboon his might --
Guid faith, he mauna fa' that!
For a' that, an' a' that,
Their dignities, an' a' that,
The pith o' sense an' pride o' worth
Are higher rank than a' that.

5.
Then let us pray that come it may
(As come it will for a' that)
That Sense and Worth o'er a' the earth
Shall bear the gree an' a' that!
For a' that, an' a' that,
It's comin yet for a' that,
That man to man the world o'er
Shall brithers be for a' that.

Perhaps cut out one or two verses and this is the one in my view.

The international anthem of brotherhood that I imagine would tempt most people around the world to sing the last verse Scot or not.

I would bet verses 1 and 5 as being the ones used with 2 choruses. We're not one of those nations which plays all 26 verses of their anthem at the Olympics or world cup !

While the other verses are all very valid in sentiment, I think they'd be too detailed for use in a national athem and also the Scots language used might be too "vernacular" for some Scottish people nowadays.

Would the Highlands adopt an anthem ? An Comunn Gaidhealach's Suas Leis A Ghaidhlig for instance ?

This seems about the right cut... I think.

Someone said my original cut concentrated too much on being poor and this is his suggestion :

For a' that

1.
Is there for honest poverty
That hings his head, an' a' that?
The coward slave, we pass him by --
We dare be poor for a' that!
For a' that, an' a' that,
Our toils obscure, an' a' that,

5.

(As come it will for a' that)
That Sense and Worth o'er a' the earth
Shall bear the gree an' a' that!
For a' that, an' a' that,
It's comin yet for a' that,
That man to man the world o'er
Shall brithers be for a' that.

I think we may have something here.
