Rhea, this is a politics discussion. People usually hold strong opinions and take contraversial stances when discussing politics. It does not mean there is fighting in the streets!
Welcome to Scotland when you visit. p.s. I don't think much of the way this Scottish politics forum has descended into an agrument about English regional autonomy. |

Scotland's control of England.
So Scotland has a disproportionate say in the governing of this country at present. That is as it should be.What about the Thatcher years when our say in governing our own country was zero?We spent eighteen years being governed by a party that we did not vote for and did not want. For a large proportion of those years we were led by a woman who was a complete anathema to the great majority of Scots and who thinly disguised her hostility to our nation. She foisted policies upon us such as the poll tax which we were subjected to a year before England which was immoral if not illegal under the terms of the act of union.Where is the democracy in this?I have very little doubt that that woman bears personal responsibility for much of the anti-English hostility, which many Scots feel, and which manifests itself every time the English football team is playing a foreign side.

Look, europeanbriton, the argument for independence isn't just about the economy, it's about self-determineation too. The union act was signed under massive pressure from England who were concerned about the threat from catholic France. The highlands and other areas of Scotland were considered by the then English government to sympithise with catholic notions. Therefore, to have Scotland in union would cut off the threat from the North.
Apart, from all that previous history, Scotland being independant wouldn't mean that it couldn't trade with England. I think a lot of Scottish people get a wee bit angry when they realise that the majority of English people just do not understand Scotland. I would say that Scottish people have a better knowledge of England than the English do of Scotland. I used to work in a shop in a touristy part of the highlands. Virtually every day we would get somebody coming in asking if there was a Natwest or a barclays machine in town. Honestly, how many Scottish people would expect to find a Royal bank or a Clydesdale machine in a small English town? Just one small example. Why do we have ER II on post boxes in Scotland. The Queen is the first ER of Scotland. But because she's the 2nd of England we get it stuck on our post boxes. Another small but telling example. Leis gach deagh dhùrachd |
