The major political parties (in order of current popularity) are:
the (Scottish) Labour Party. This is the same party as forms the UK government in London. They support some devolution of power to Scotland but essentially want to keep the UK intact with real power remaining in London. The Scottish National Party. The SNP has a platform of independence for Scotland within the European Union. This would mean a fully functioning government for Scotland, no UK and full membership of the EU. The SNP also favours joining the Euro zone. The (Scottish) Liberal Democrats. The Lib-Dems are a federalist party which wants the UK to continue to exist, but with a federal form of government. The (Scottish) Conservative and Unionist Party. This is the most right wing of mainstream British political parties. They favour as much power as possible remaining in London and are generally anti-EU. Most of them still dream of a return to the days of Margaret Thatcher. Very anti-Euro. The Scottish Socialist Party. Basically a one-man band who are strongly left wing. They tend to favour Scottish independence. The Scottish Green party. Pro-independence ecology party. A good source of information is the Scottish Politics pages website at www.alba.org.uk / ------------------ The man o' independent mind, He looks and laughs at a' that. |
