I wish I could get tuition for 1000.00. I work on a government-supported uni and the tuition here is over $7,000 a year (over 3,500.00 pounds). There are many students not in school because they can't afford it. The head of our uni is trying to raise the tuition again so she can implement more interest activities for students. Activities that most students won't use and coulsn't care lees about, but we will all have to pay for these programmes.

Free education is theoretically a good idea. But the truth is that a lot of people don't appreciate things unless they have paid for them or earned them in some way. How many people will attend university just because it is free? What a good way to avoid entering the work force and have a good excuse to continue partying with your friends as many do when they enter college. It took me 10 years to pay off my college debt and although I sure wish my education had been free, I guarantee you I didn't want to waste my tuition money by goofing off, getting drunk, partying too much, or skipping class.

Hi anybody !
Ummm, Anita ?
Iīm in Hannover and I pay tuition fees...
And to all the others:
Education has to be free.
In these times, where knowlege and development is the only key to success, you canīt afford to restrict education to the upper classes.
And if the leaders of a country would think a bit about it, theyīd see that they really cut in their own flesh, because without being top in research and science, you donīt have any chance on the international markets.
And I doubt that paying for education would really encourage me to work harder. My parents have already to pay enough for my education (books, room...) and I just ainīt got the time to work for money.
It just barely works out for studying, learning and partying.
Donīt think I could work and donīt party, when I come home from Uni, itīs 6pm and then I have to learn, so that I can (sometimes) get to a party at 8 or 9pm...
Ok, ciao for now,
Dirk

Dirk, sounds like you are getting a free education. That's great though, at least you won't have to spend ten years paying for your education as I did. No one who is willing to take out a student loan will be denied the opportunity to get an education, regardless of their social status since you don't pay for it until you quit going to school. You are very fortunate to have parents who are willing and able to pay for your tuition, room and board, supplies, and money for partying. I am sure that you appreciate the value of an education, but writing out 120 checks over the years to cover that cost leads to a knew understanding of the word "value". I may just be feeling a little sarcastic over young people who give the excuse that they can't get an education because they can't afford it (I work with young people.). That excuse would've got me no where in life. Forgive my sarcasm when I say, oh well, someone has to dump the garbage. You don't need much of an education for that but someone's got to do it. Imagine where we'd be with out doctors, teachers, and garbage men.

Dirk,
I heard that universities in Niedersachsen ask each student to pay 100 DM (circa 30 pounds) per semester. Comapared to British tuition fess it's not much. But, as far as I remember, the sudents in Niedersachsen did protest by refusing to pay the amount. What has become of this? I live in NRW, that's why I don't habe to pay tuition fees.

Yeah, 100 Mark...
until now...
The responsible man sais even now that heīs going to raise it to 2000-4000 Mark.
And here in germany you wonīt get money from anyone unless you can give something as a security...
And yeah, we did protest... I didna pay the money. As did others. But to be effective, the others would have to stop paying, too.
I had to pay it later, otherwise the uni would have thrown me out.
Sadly, we students are not fighting for our rights.
Ciao,
Dirk
