Now here's an interesting thing. Our armed forces' deployment was largely determined by the Cold War. Much of our army was based in Germany, facing the Warsaw Pact. Much of our air force was based in northern Scotland, to patrol the North Atlantic. Much of our navy was based in the English Channel... doing what exactly?

Given our strategic priorities, I find it surprising that only 15% of RAF bases are where they were most needed, and what on earth has the RN been playing at? Keeping an eye on Napoleon, maybe? Even when our national survival depended on keeping eye on the Soviets, Whitehall couldn't bring itself to move most of the military out of the south of England where it really didn't have much to do, did it?
