Question Pubs In Scotland?

Hi folks,

I'm a Scottish Laddie, now resident in Western Canada.

Now ... something that bugs me, as I can no longer defend the case, is many people saying that a lot of pubs in the "UK" have closed their doors. Since I've been out of Scotland since 2003, I can't defend this topic of debate.

So ... can some local folks back in Scotia, enlighten me as to the situation in major cities like Aberdeen, Glasgow, Edinburgh etc etc.

Cheers!
Nessie

Pubs closing

In Glasgow some have, for varying reasons, but there are more now than ever.
i cant give a statistical figure though.
Pubs are better now than the howfs of old, but sometimes at the sacrifice of the elusive 'atmosphere' that they all seek.

Yes a lot of pubs have closed and it's due to a combination of the smoking ban and the fact that supermarkets are selling cut price booze which means more people are buying a carry out to drink at home than going to the pub.

On the upside, lots of bank buildings have been converted to bars/restaurants. A better use for them than their original one - liars and thieves the lot of them!

The Dome in Edinburgh is an example: Welcome To The Dome

Thanks for the replies folks!!

A good friend of mine in Grangemouth echoed pretty much the same feedback. He also enjoys a drink at home, more than say 5-10 years ago, but doesn't mean that every pub in a 20 mile radius have closed their doors, just an adapted culture to some degree.

I guess the current financial situation is also a factor, but I sincerely hope that "pub culture" will be a part of Scottish life for a long time to come.

Awe thi best!!
