Pubs will always be part of our 'culture' - but the number and variety have changed - and will continue to change over the next decade - due, in part, to the economy and the fact that it's cheaper to get a 'kerryoot' and drink at home, via a supermarket drinks section.

I remember a time when pubs were considered posh if they didn't have steel roller shutters

When did they start serving food in Scottish pubs ?

The first I saw hot food in a pub, "chicken in a basket" was on a holiday to Wales.

When I was young, it seemed pubs were for the serious business of drinking alcohol, not for eating or soft drinks !

I remember in a pub in Rose St in the early 1970's, I was getting a round in and a lady in our company wanted an orange juice. The barman told me I couldn't get one and if I wanted one I should go to a cafe.

Mind you, in Edinburgh, for organised insults and deprived service, Willie Ross's Oxford Bar in Thistle St was in a class of its own. He used to open up when felt like it and often shut it mid-session and chased out the patrons when he was going to get messages for his wife. The only seating was salvaged church pews and he didn't serve lager, half-pints or Englishmen.

The Oxford Bar is the literary haunt of Ian Rankin's character Inspector Rebus - he (IR) is known to frequent the place, too!
