Hunting and Cooking Wild Haggis

I'm planning another trip to Scotland. THis time i would like to stay in a remote B&B and try my hand at fishing and hunting. I heard of a great place on The Cook's Tour. I have a friend here who is going to start teaching me hunting with his father. Anyway, i'm starting to look into the wild haggis....

Its true that the wild ones taste much better. It is very difficult to get them here in Western Canada. I think they would probably do well if introduced in the Mountain areas, but they don't like to upset the natural ecology of the area.

We used to snare them in Nova Scotia, where there is a wild population established by Scottish immigrants. I am not sure if this would be legal in Scotland - and it certainly is not as sporting.

Be careful as they can be nasty if they are cornered!

Yes, you have a point. I have not looked into the legalities of hunting. I understand there is a faction who see it as inhumane.... but you know how that goes. Some would have you not eating any meat or fish at all.

Perhaps there is hope to get them established in Western Canada yet!

I don't think there would be any problem with hunting them in Scotland - I just wasn't sure if it would be legal to snare them. Snares are rather unforgiving things and if you were to catch something other than a haggis it wouldn't be very nice.

My son & I are going hunting on Saturday - undecided as to what we are going for - partridge, ducks/geese, or deer. We will probably wait for a weather report then decide. None of these can compare to a good wild haggis though for eating. I have thought about raising some domestic ones - but I'm not sure how they would do on the prairie?

I don't know either, but i remember seeing one on a live cam in some grass fields. Maybe a little more research would give us an idea.
