"Why do you think Scotland had more discoverers and inventors in the pre-20th century than there is today"
Whether this is a serious question or not it does deserve more debate as this is an area which is important to Scotlands stagnent economy.
As a professional 'Discoverer/Inventor' (product designer)who has spent 20 years working for manufacturers in Scotland my views are based on my experience.
We still produce lots, if not more, designers, engineers, scientists etc BUT increasingly it is more difficult, in Scotland, to find jobs and build a career in these areas and as a result graduates emigrate. Our reputation abroad is very good but at home the companies that use these skills are being shut in the name of globalisation, cost cutting and the governments drive to a service based economy. So far Scottish politicians attempts to support this sector have been dismal compared to other countries.
In the modern world it is extremely difficult and expensive to develop ideas and bring them to market, so the chances of a single person doing this are slim.
A positive point is that there is money out there for the right idea, we just need to get our fingers out and make it happen.
