I'm not going to delete this thread! As far as I am concerned, the old Star Trek had a lot of then Sci-Fi tech items that actually came true! For instance, my daughter's mobile phone looks like an old Capt'n Kirk communicator! She can even flip it open like him! LOL

I like the original, it's so dated now that it's almost funny. My fav is TNG. I could never get into DS9, altho I do like Avery Brooks, but him alone couldn't really carry the show.

I did not like Voyager, I felt like between it and DS9 they couldn't WAIT to get rid of TNG. Voyager never did anything for me, it was too full of the old Star Trek clichets jazzed up for the 90's!

I know TNG kind of started off with pretty poor acting and some scripts that left a lot to be desired but it grew out of that and developed a character of it's own. At least they developed new and interesting 'aliens' and didn't rely on life forms already created for another show!

I haven't seen the new Enterprise, is that the one where they have the pretty female Borg officer? or is that Voyager? To me that's as unreal as a giggeling Vulcan! I'm a purist! lol

I like the Star Trek movies, mostly. The Wrath of Kahn was the first one I saw and seeing all the people dressed up in their Trekker outfits at the Cinema was a hoot and a half! I like the one, too, where they go in search of God, only on Star Trek can you hear the burning question.... "Why does God need a star ship?" LOL I am not as excited about the TNG movies, some of them are gory, espically the one when they encounter the Borg Queen, G*R*O*S*S! I did enjoy seeing Data almost mess his pants when they crash landed in, was that Generations? Where Kirk and Picard met in the Nexxus wave. That one was well done.

Having grown up watching the old show, it's fun to see them, I have great memories of my Dad and I sitting together watching them. When I was a kid he took me to see all the hokey Sci Fi movies as my Mom wouldn't go with him. Maybe I like sci fi because I have fond memories associated with it? Who knows!

Trekkies

I think they want to be called Trekkers! You might get vaporized if you call them Trekkies! LOL

I have a very understanding friend whose husband took her to Spokane, WA one year for their anniversary, to a Star Trek convention! She said she enjoyed it as there was some good people watching and some celebs from the shows. Some folks really get into the costuming and make up. I think it would be fun to go to one and have yourself done up as something! What a fantasy! heeheehee

Hmm...I'm a big fan of SF but this is the Science and Technology forum and we're not talking any science or technology. Shouldn't this be moved to Film + Lit (which isn't excusively about ScotLit - I hope). Mods?

Artoo

While Star Trek is considered to be Science Fiction, much of the technology created to make the stories believable is what could be called cutting edge technology.

As mod in both this forum and the lit forum, I am making the judgement that a discussion of Star Trek, as a whole, does belong here. It is not literature, I have read one Star Trek book, I would rather read the back of a cereal box than wade through one of them again. If someone wished to discuss a Star Trek movie, it would be appropriate there, here, we are talking about the entire concept.

(And you are right, the lit/film forum is open to all lit and film, Scottish as well! There was a rather long discussion a couple of years ago about that, limiting that forum to Scottish lit is narrow minded! Scottish people world wide enjoy film and stories, from around the world!)

So, do you enjoy Star Trek?

Cutting edge technology? Oh, come on! There might be a superficial resemblance between a cell-phone and a Star Trek communicator but that's it. Yes, I enjoy Star Trek but it's not science. Subspace comms? What's subspace? FTL travel? Impossible! 'Beam me up, Scotty'? Incredible! It might be crap lit but I'd still like it discussed in Lit/Film. We won't get decent SF accepted as mainstream Lit if it's regarded as Sci + Tech. It's a bit like having Ivanhoe in History rather than Lit. Or Judge Dredd here.
