The Shiboleth Word, they (and we're generalising wildly here) have difficulty with, check the telly! is "deteriorated". wullie

A bit like the Germans being unable to say, "Scheveningen"!

I don't like it when people can't say "loch", but also don't say "Johann Sebastian Back", enjoy a bottle of "Riocka" or talk about "The Third Reick".

Haha, yes. Iain Banks has a wee rant about this in (I think) "The Crow Road", where the narrator remarks that it's funny how all the English newsreaders who seem unable to deal with "loch" are suddenly able to cope with Arabic names like Ahmed.

As for people who will pronounce "Bach" and "Rioja" but utterly fail (or simply don't bother) when the words are Scottish, I might be wrong in this, but I tend to suspect that some people would hate to sound like uneducated fools by pronouncing some foreign language words wrongly, but they do not think that Scottish words are worthy of the same respect.

Grrr, I say. (with proper Rs)

Or when they don't want to fall into the "Reick" trap, they get aound it by saying Third Reish

Then there's "last but one" instead of second-last or penultimate.

Not forgetting "Friday week" instead of a week on Friday.

Mind you, I hate it when American cooks talk about bayzil which is an erb. Of course, so is aw-RIG-ano, whilst a-RUG-ula is a type of leaf.
