I don't believe he was insane or the embodiment of evil as he is sometimes portrayed. I think he was an eccentric intellectual with an unhealthy fascination for the occult but otherwise pretty harmless. He was also an expert chess player and skilled mountaineer and he should maybe have focused on those pastimes instead of involving himself in supernatural mumbo jumbo.
