Ifti's, portrait of a Broken Britain, leaves me puzzled I'm afraid, I just do not recognise the country portrayed here. It's over the top "gloom & doomery" has no reality in fact, sex education is blamed for teenage pregnancy as if there was never any problem hitherto. The Dutch, for example have had sex education & freely available contraception for yonks and hardly any unwanted teenage pregnancies. Crime figures in Scotland are down, police numbers up, the Recession's a problem, but that's the business cycle, despite Gordon Brown's claim to end boom & bust and "save the world" If you're out of work things are bad but the majority seem to be doing OK. Harder times are no doubt coming, so be prepared to have the pips squeezed, but civilization aint ending anytime soon. Yes bad things happen and the papers are full of it, have you ever read through newspapers from 100/150 years ago? nothing changes. We do have a drug problem, which never existed in my young day, but so has everywhere else! yes kids get drunk, we got drunk! but the vast majority of them will make fine citizens and no doubt indulge in a bit of "hand wringing" when their time comes. Religion has largely gone down the tubes and a good thing too, and hopefully the General Election will clear most of the "tarry fingered gentry" out of Westminster. How come I'm meeting nice people all the time, maybe I'm moving in the wrong circles! but I'll certainly be steering clear of any pubs where Ifti's propping up the bar and holding court! You're only here once and life is what you make it, so is your attitude to it! so Lighten Up & don't cut the wrists just yet!
