The secret of Catholic education as I experienced it was pretty simple, and entirely secular: Mastery through practice. The school had no illusions that learning was either rapid or easy.

I'm sure that applies to most schools, the RCs have no monopoly of hard work. Regarding Glasgow in particular, how do you explain the traditionally high percentage of RC inmates in Barlinnie. Economic arguments don't hold up, they're no worse off than anybody else. The numbers of Jews in jail has been traditionally smaller than their share of the population, despite no Jewish schools. Kids are sent to school to be educated, not to have their heads filled with superstitious nonsense. The notion that there is a Catholic way to teach Maths is patent nonsense. Things are doubtless changing, RC church attendance is in freefall, in line with the other churches. The Catholic clergy's place as leaders of their flock had been severely dented by endemic sex abuse cases, and the present Pope implicated in past cover-ups. Whilst there are doubtless many decent priests, would you trust this institution with your kids.

The OP used to be a moderator here - hence the proliferation of 'Kaffliks is Best' posts. Eventually, he had his knuckles rapped and we have been fortunate lthat he has not shown his face here for quite a while.
