Be sure your sin will find you out

This week's Reading list:
* Bere**** / Genesis 44:18-47:27
* Yechezkel / Ezekiel 37:15-28
* Lukas / Luke 6:9-16

Beresheet {45:1} Then Yoseph couldn't control himself before all those who stood before him, and he cried, "Cause every ish (man) to go out from me!" There stood no ish with him, while Yoseph made himself known to his brothers. {45:2} He wept aloud. The Mizrayim (Egyptians) heard, and the house of Pharaoh heard. {45:3} Yoseph said to his brothers, "I am Yoseph! Does my 'ab (father) still live?" His brothers couldn't answer him; for they were terrified at his presence.

Try to picture this scene. The eleven had not the slightest inkling that this man before them was Yoseph their brother. He had always been aloof as well as rough and harsh to them and He had always spoken to them in (the Egyptian lenguage) Egyptian through an interpreter. Now after Yhudah (Judah) had just poured out his heart to Yoseph, accepting responsibility for what Benyamin (Benjamin) had supposedly done, offering himself as Yoseph’s slave in place of Benyamin, everything changes. Yoseph sends all his attendants and aids out of the room and most probably in flawless Hebrew say to his brothers, “Ani Yosef” “I am Yoseph!” Now I would have expected the reaction from the brothers to be one of shock or perhaps surprise but that is not what happened. Scripture tells us that they were terrified. Your version of the Bible may say troubled but the Hebrew word used here translates better as terrified or alarmed. Why this reaction? I believe it has to do with what Reuven (Ruben) said as recorded in last week Parsha Miketz. Bere**** {42.26} "What is this that G-D has done to us?"

Middle Eastern people tend to be a little superstitious, therefore I believe that the brothers thought this was the Bat Kol (Voice of G-d) speaking to them when they heard Yoseph flawless Hebrew. They probably thought it was HaShem finally exposing their sin and this was judgement day. Can you picture it? Yoseph took them by complete surprise, only to them it was not a surprise it was terror! Can you imagine how low their hearts must have sunk when Yoseph asked the brothers to come near to him? The last thing I am sure any of them wanted to do was to approach this guy! That is why I believe Yoseph had to repeat himself and explain who he was and how he felt towards his brothers:

Beresheet {45:4} Yoseph said to his brothers, "Come near to me, please." They came near. "He said, I am Yoseph, your brother, whom you sold into Mizrayim. {45:5} Now don't be grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that you sold me here, for G-D sent me before you to preserve life. {45:6} For these two years has the famine been in the land, and there are yet five years, in which there will be neither plowing nor harvest. {45:7} G-D sent me before you to preserve you a remnant in the earth, and to save you alive by a great deliverance. {45:8} So now it wasn't you who sent me here, but G-D, and he has made me a 'ab to Pharaoh, L-RD of all his house, and ruler over all the land of Mizrayim.

Beresheet {45:5} “Now don't be grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that you sold me here,…” Yoseph had heard the brothers talking between themselves, beating themselves up for what they had done twenty years earlier. It was Guilt that caused these culpable brothers to react the way they did. They were so guilt ridden, especially after all the episodes with their disguised brother Yoseph. The first episode was the incident with Shimon (Simon), which was followed by the money found in their sacks then finally the cup of divination found in Benyamin’s sack. These guys were already on edge with all that was happening, so is it any wonder that this latest incident took them over the top?

Guilt is a terrible thing to have to live with. It sucks your energy and makes you suspicious of everyone. Have you ever noticed that a person who does not trust anyone usually can not be trusted? Or that a person that cheats people usually ends up being cheated? Well a guilty person is a person that has no peace, they are always looking over their shoulder. Yoseph’s brothers though everything that was happening to them related to what they had done and I believe that is typical of guilt.

Reuven and his co-conspirators did not get away with what they did, not for one minute, not from the day after they did it. Their guilt followed them all their lives and here we see HaShem using it against them to expose them.

You know, you do not have to rob a bank, commit murder or throw your brother into a pit to suffer from guilt. Sinning against HaShem’s Word, His Torah; is all you need do to suffer from guilt. Many times the consequence of our guilt is bad mishaps, sometimes it is illness or even depression. But the purpose of the consequences is always the same. HaShem wants you to recognize your guilt, confess it and repent. Think you have gotten away with something? Well here is what G-d has to say to you!

Bamidbar (Numbers) {32.23}……. behold, you have sinned against the HaShem: and be sure your sin will find you out.
