"Psychoanalyzing G-d" Parashat Hashavua Nitzavim - Vayelech; Year 5763; By Messianic Jewish Rabbi Yacob Farber, CMY

Congregation Melech Yisrael, Toronto, Canada
Shabbat 23 Elul 5763, September 20, 2003
http://www.cmy.on.ca / cmy@ca.inter.net

This week's Reading list:
* Devarim / Deut 29:9 - 31:30
* Yeshayahu / Isa. 61:10-63:9
* Romim / Romans 10:1-3
* Shabbat Candle lighting for Toronto and surrounding areas
* Shabbat Candles 7:01 p.m.
* Havdala Candles 8:09 p.m.

There is a double reading this week, Nitzavim and Vayelech so I have commented on both portions. The passage I am going to focus on for Parasha Nitzavim is quite short, but it very profound. I think in fact that it has far reaching implications into the lives of both traditional Jews, Messianic Jews and believers in general.

Devarim {29:29} The secret things belong to HaSHEM our G-D; but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our bnei (children) forever, that we may do all the words of this Torah.

What Moshe (Moses) is saying here is quite simple! It is not going to take me pages and pages to describe what he means nor will I have to take up a lot of space explaining it. What Moshe is telling us here is that we should not occupy ourselves trying to figure out the things that G-d has not revealed to us in His Torah. We have in other words not been told everything. Rather Moshe is telling Yisrael and us that we should be focusing exclusively on doing the thing that HaShem has told us. The revealed things, those things which we know, those are the things we should be doing and be teaching our children to do forever.

How many people do you know that have read things into the Word of G-d, which are not even there. They are so preoccupied with trying to dissect G-d's Word so they read into it things He has not even written. Instead of focusing in on the things that G-d has revealed to us these people focus in on trying to figure out the things He has not revealed to us, the thing in fact He does not even want us to know!

There are people who dig and dig into the Scriptures trying to psychoanalyze G-d. I believe Moshe was prophesying here. I believe he knew that the bnei Yisrael (children of Yisrael) would try to pick apart every single word, every single syllable of the Torah and make something out of it that it is not. It is for this reason that we have the Talmud (oral law) and the Zohar (Jewish mysticism), and a proliferation of Messianic and Christian books that search into the secret things of G-d. If G-d's people, yes even you and me would concentrate solely on what we are told to do and not try to figure out or second guess G-d, we be a lot better off. Rav Shaul (Paul) gave us the exact same instructions:

Romans {11:33} O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of G-d! how unsearchable are his judgements, and his ways past finding out!

My advice to you is the same as G-d's. Stop trying to figure out what is not in His Word. Stop trying to do what is not there and start doing what is!

The passage I would like to talk on for Parasha Vayelech is:

Devarim {31:3} HaSHEM your G-D, he will go over before you; he will destroy these nations from before you, and you shall dispossess them: [and] Yehoshua (Joshua), he shall go over before you, as HaSHEM has spoken. {31:4} HaSHEM will do to them as he did to Sihon and to Og, the kings of the Amorites, and to their land; whom he destroyed. {31:5} HaSHEM will deliver them up before you, and you shall do to them according to all the mitzvot (commandments) which I have commanded you. {31:6} Be strong and of good courage, don't be afraid, nor be scared of them: for HaSHEM your G-D, he it is who does go with you; he will not fail you, nor forsake you.

Yisrael was poised; ready to enter into the land HaShem had promised them. However there were nations in the land, which they would have to dispossess. So G-d is reminding Yisrael of the victories He gave them over king Og and king Sihon and how he destroyed them and their land. Now He is telling Yisrael, as they are about to enter into the land of Canaan to be strong and do to exactly what He has told them to do. He wants Yisrael to be obedient not to read into what He has said, but to do exactly what He has said. If they do this then what He did to king Og and king Sihon, He will do to all the others who they confront in their pathway.

I think these verses in Parasha Vayelech are an excellent compliment to the one we just talked about in Parasha Nitzavim. The victories in our lives are not going to be a walk in the park. There are going to be enemies in our way, enemies, which we too will have to dispossess and they are not going to give up that easily. However if we too follow HaShem's commandments to the letter He will dispossess them for us as He did for the bnei Yisrael in the past and we will have the victory.

What we have in these Scriptures is a very simple principle. Do what G-d says, believe what He says, have faith in what He says, be strong, be of good courage, do not be afraid or scared and He will not fail nor forsake you. Yeshua told us the exact same thing prior to His departure back into heaven, He said:

Mattityahu (Matthew) {28.19} Go therefore, and teach kol goyim (all nations), tevilah (immerse) them in the name of the Av (Father), and of the Ben (Son), and of the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit): {28.20} Teaching them to observe all my mitzvot (commandments): and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

The principle is simple; if we are faithful He will be faithful.
