Okay this may sound a bit stupid but I hope you'll bare with me.
I spend my vacation in Cornwall this year and on Sunday me and my friend went to a methodist church service.
I really enjoyed the serice, especially because it was very personal. Only thing I couldn't figure out is what a methodist really is. In Germany we only have catholic or protestant. I understand that in general a methodist church is protestant, but where are the differences? I would be really greatful if anyone could help me out.

Methodists are Protestant, but they follow Arminian, as opposed to Calvinist, theology. That means they believe in free will, that Jesus died for everyone but it is up to the individual to accept God's grace through faith in Him, that it is possible to resist God's grace, that is possible to lose one's justification after being justified, and then regain it, etc. So theologically, they are closer to Catholics than they are to Calvinists, who believe that free will doesn't exist, that God arbitrarily chose who He would save before time began, that Jesus only died for those few elect, that grace is irresistable, and that once one is saved, he is always saved.

The differences between Methodism and Catholicism are that Methodists believe the Bible contains the fullness of God's revelation, with no slack to be picked up by apostolic Tradition, that they reject the sacramental priesthood, and that they believe that justification is by faith alone.

Many thanks!
At least now I'll know more about the beliefs when I go to a methodist church service again.
