"Passing the Buck"; By Messianic Jewish believer Ellen (Elisheva) Farber, CMY

I am finding a most disturbing "spirit" among many believers these days. No it is not a new spirit but an old one that seems to be gaining ground. I am not even sure there is a Scripture reference for it but I do see this ugly creature growing by leaps and bounds. We could call it the spirit of "Pass the Buck" or that old adage, "The Devil Made Me Do It". This would not be so evident if we were all part of the world, you know that Scripture...being in the world but not being of the world. Well anyway this is how I see it.

More and more the concept of taking responsibility for oneself in the believing community is dying. Instead of our dying to self it seems that we are all clinging to self. It seems that the event of Adam passing the buck to Eve is very popular, more than ever.

Where there is lack of commitment there is also lack of taking responsibility for our falling so short of G-d’s standards. How can we repent of sin if we don’t even know that we are sinning? In the world a homosexual does not accept the responsibility for their sexuality saying instead they are that way because of his or her genes. This of course is not true. Our sexuality is a choice. People also do not accept responsibility for their economic status. "My parents were not successful in business so neither am I." Not true. This particular short coming is not hereditary as well. "That woman made me so angry I had to abuse her." Try again!

What I am getting to I guess, is lack of faith and definitely as I mentioned before, the lack of commitment is what does it. Complacency is also a huge factor here. If we do not do anything about anything or fess up to our problems, will they go away on their own??? It is so difficult for most to say I am sorry because they simply do not want to admit they are at fault. A father hits and yells at his child in public because the child misbehaved and made him hit and yell at him in public, or so he says. Not a very good excuse.

A person is single for many years because the L-rd has not sent them the right person. Sorry. If they are to be married, the right person is sent by the L-rd so I have to question whether that person is hearing the voice of their heavenly Master or their own voice.

Could you imagine if Moshe did not accept the responsibility for the children of Israel? We would all be Egyptians. Even King Shaul knew he could not pass the buck any longer so he fell on his sword. Joseph’s brothers could not blame him any longer so they killed him off, or so they thought. The slothful servant buried his talent because he didn’t want to take a chance, he had no faith and he was complacent. I have seen heads of households make it late to services and blame it on their wives and children. If the head is leavened then the whole lump is also leavened. Believers make vows and do not keep them with excuses at the last minute. Who are we? Are we children of the living G-d of Israel? Saints? New creations? Or are we the old man, the one with no backbone? The old creature that can’t stand up tall and take the heat? If we can’t take the heat here we surely aren’t going to be able to withstand the tribulation and turmoil to come. We are fat and comfortable and we want to stay that way!

By not accepting responsibility for ourselves, our short comings, it makes us unrighteous. So maybe I do have Scripture for you, let us read 1 Corinthians 6:9-10... "Don’t you know that unrighteous people will have no share in the Kingdom of G-d? Don’t delude yourselves - people who engage in sex before marriage, who worship idols, who engage in sex after marriage with someone other than their spouse, who engage in active or passive homosexuality, who steal, who are greedy, who get drunk, who assail people with contemptuous language, who rob, none of them will share in the Kingdom of G-d." (Complete Jewish Bible)
