Mebbe the fire is a metaphor, but the damnashun is real enuf. Ah like C.S. Lewis's picture o' hell in The Great Divorce. That wis a guid read.

An omnipotent, eternal God is the most incredible, supernatural entity a person could concieve of. If someone is willing to believe in that, then it's extremely easy to believe in miracles.

"How could the Red sea be parted? That's physically impossible!"
"Well, if there's an omnipotent God surely He could do it."

"How could food fall from the sky for 40 years? That's physically impossible!"
"Well, if there's an omnipotent God surely He could do it."

"How could a fish talk? That's physically impossible!"
See where I'm going? If there's an onmipotent God then He can suspend natural law at any time, and make things that are physically impossible happen.

So easy isn't it?

10,000 years ago: why is the ground shaking and all the boulders falling from the mountain? The Gods are angry.

5,000 years ago: why did we lose the battle and get taken into captivity? God is angry with us.

1,000 years ago: what was that flash of light in the sky and that deep rumbling sound? God did it!

Today: how can a fish speak Hebrew? God can do it if he wants to.

Do you see some pattern emerging? Maybe God is something made up so people can explain what can't be explained yet. Me, I'd sooner own up that I don't know rather than make up some supernatural being to explain what I can't.

So, sorry, "God did it" isn't good enough. If you don't know, say you don't know. If you do know, explain to me how a creature with no lungs or vocal cords can produce a sound, let alone speak a human language.

False analogy. Modern theists don't call every unexplained or partially explained natural phenomenon a miracle. We don't call simultaneous particle anit-particle formations miracles, nor do we call tornadoes miracles. A miracle is something that explicitly contradicts natural law, like a fish speaking Hebrew or a person hearing voices in his head telling Him that an ocean is going to split open so his people can cross, and then it actually happening. Human kind could theoretically decipher every law of physics in the universe. But we still wouldn't be able to explain why a fish spoke Hebrew in terms of natural law.
