Are fish conscious? Who asks this kind of question and SERIOUSLY wants to discuss it? I mistakenly thought that a question of this urgency needed to be dealt with light-heartedly. Well, I'm afraid my name is now MUD among what seems to be the more "popular" people in this forum. No matter...I was rudely instructed to go and "find my own sandbox" and THAT is precisely what I have down.

I'd like to discuss anything paranormal...and NO the humorless people in this forum do not count. I'm not saying everyone is humorless, but those that are...you know who you are.

Anyway, paranormal...what's your favorite off-the-wall theory? Please feel free to make jokes on this thread...I won't send you to "another sandbox".

Lightbulb sandbox

Hi, can I play in ur sandbox?LOL, seems their r awful big boys, here, with awful big, emm Egos, who have an under-developed sense of humour! So much crap talked about, that can never b proved, so whats it all 4! Some people appear 2 b so Elitist, that a question posed 2 them, with humour, brings about a panic reaction, and they "dont want 2 discuss it". As a really funny man said 1c, Honesty,& Sincerety,r important 2 get along with others, and if u can Fake that, u have got it made! Lighten Up!Such intolerance 2 humour, indicates, a closed & threatened Mind! In other words, think as I think & u r OK!If u dont, I dont want 2 play or talk 2 u! Cheers, no Tears!

"Are fish conscious? Who asks this kind of question and SERIOUSLY wants to discuss it?"

Er...presumably the person who started the thread and other contributors who have responded seriously on that thread - you don't have to ponder, their names are there in black and white. The question would be of interest to anyone with an interest in the nature of consciousness, and it's biological basis and also perhaps anyone who is interested in animal welfare etc. Why should the matter automatically be treated jokingly just because the topic is fish?

"I mistakenly thought that a question of this urgency needed to be dealt with light-heartedly."

100% correct.

"I'd like to discuss anything paranormal...and NO the humorless people in this forum do not count."

As you are welcome to do. However do not mistake people who wish to see humour used appropriately as being humourless!

Remember that this is the Religion and Philosophy Forum; unless clearly labelled as otherwise, (like this one for example), it is safe to assume that the threads here are meant to be read and replied to seriously.

Finally humour is not anathema here but there is a difference between injecting appropriate humour into a serious thread and attempting to turn the whole thing into a virtual bouncy castle...a difference you don't seem to have grasped.

The question about fish is of interest given the recent discovery by scientists that apparently fish have the capacity to feel pain.It is also of interest to many anglers like myself.I have often wondered having caught fish if they actually experience distress however with the exception of eels as I have stated previously I didn't believe this to be the case. The question is of great relevance to those who campaign against angling claiming it to be a cruel sport.

Welcome all, to my funny farm!

TomSawyer...I invite you to discuss parapsychology in my wonderful sandbox. I, for one, won't laugh at you. Trust me, if I told you the things I've seen you'd curl up into a ball and cry for your mother (no offense, but it's some wacky stuff). Besides Tom, this might be some sort of "bonding" experience for us, considering you seem to think I'm an idiot most of the time. I offer a truce...based on a shared interest in parapsychology. The ball's in your court...

Bat...you may most definitely play in my sandbox! I invite all creative thinkers, jokers, and jesters. Besides, I think life's too short to be a stick-in-the-mud. Don't you agree?

Sigurd...chill out. I was actually reffering to the CHARACTER of a person when I said, "What kind of person..." As for my own character, I joke continually...and this is the first time someone has complained. I'm very careful not to be "offensive" or off-color...my remarks are fun-loving. And I did seriously discuss the topic, but I used humor. I am not a dry person..and I refuse to be so. I didn't want to disrupt the thread. I expected to get a laugh or two, or at the least a chuckle...I would have been satisfied with a chuckle. But alas...

Andy...I ACTUALLY thought your eel thing was pretty interesting. I was just being funny, friendly (myself)...didn't mean to disrupt. Cheers.

I haven't read what this is all about, and quite frankly I don't care.
Spitfire, don't worry about it.

So, paranormal.
I have a huge interest in Spontaneous Human Combustion, which I think I've professed elsewhere on this forum, so if anyone fancies discussing that for a bit, bring it on.

If you're at all interested in SHC, go read 'Fire From Heaven (or how safe are you from burning)' by Michael Harrison.

Opened my eyes to the possibilities and probabilities of SHC.
Also gave me invaluable technical support for my third year dissertation and thesis.

Oh, and I love the bone microwave oven theory.
The wick theory just doesn't hold water for me.
The magic number is not three. It's 2,500.
