Getting a handle on hairballs will help keep your cat healthy.

Clumps of indigestible hair tend to accumulate in cats' digestive tracts as a result of their frequent self-grooming. If coughing up hairballs is a problem for your cat, brush more frequently to cut down on loose hair, consider cat foods designed to help break down hairballs, and ask you vet about gels designed to help them pass back up more easily.

be careful what kinda treats you give them, because I gave my cats some defurrums (but I guess all brands are all the same really), to break down their hair balls, since they are both long haired, and one of my cats developed cat acne. Its not for sure that those treats were the problem, but the problem started within 2 weeks of starting those treats, and went away about 2 weeks after I stopped giving them to him, and actually began the clearing up process as soon as I stopped feeding them to him. Obviously, the other cat was completely fine with those treats and quite happily finished the bag by himself (eating the correct number each day), and they did stop his hairballs for a bit, or perhaps he just did them outside
