(The American Kennel Club)---Asking the RIght Questions---It's important to ask questions before you choose a dog.
What kind of temperament is the dog likely to have? Temperament is a primary concern. Most breeds were developed with specific functions in mind. Some were bred to hunt at the side of their master, while others were left to guard herds of sheep. The job your prospective pet was bred to perform may provide insight into how well he will accept visitors into your home or how he will behave around children. So be sure to find out all you can about your pet's origin. What size will your dog be when it is full grown? Size is especially a concern is lyou live in an apartment or a planned communnity. How much exercise will your dog require? Some dogs are every athlectic by nature and are happiest with a good deal of exercise. While ALL dogs need regular exercise, some breeds are happy with frequent walks. Others need to run. Will youe dog need a LOT of coat care? Some dogs require frequent grooming and require regular visits to the groomer to look their best.Make sure you know how much care your dog will need before you buy. Will you have time for TRAINING your dog? Basic obedience is esssential for all dogs. A well-mannered dog makes the best companion. What HEALTH issues exist in the breed? What type of health screens have been developed to test for these problems? Once you have identified the breed that suits you and yourlifestyle, review your choice. Becoming a pet owner is a long-term commitment; this is a choice you will have to live with for years. |

A friend had a greyhound she got from a rescue group: her dog had been a race dog that did not win, so the original owners let it go to this group that found new owners for them; the dog WAS calm, and gentle---it was a very nice pet! As for me...I have 5 indoor cats, and I feed 10 outside cats---they are my first choice for a pet (for me). I think that everyone needs to have the pet they are best suited for.

We have two cats as well. A male "Rocky" and our female "Sarafina". We've had them for 11 years now. They're still spunky kitties. We're involved in Greyhound adoption, and yes both mine came from the racing industry. Zayla was 1 1/2 when we got her. She never raced and came from the farm she was raised. Bella was four when we got her and did race but I can't find records on her. I only know is she was sent to three different states before she was turned over to our adoption volunteers in Colorado. They're remarkable dogs and they do well with my cats. We also foster Greyhounds until they find a home.
