Unless children know how to approach a dog, their enthusiasm and curiosity may provoke growls or bites. Teach your children that they should:

* Stay away from a strange dog unless the owner is present.

* Be especially wary of dogs raised in homes where there are no shildren.

* Kep a safe distance away from a dog's mouth and paws.

* Enter a home where a dog lives only if someone who can control it is theere.

* Make a fist and let the dog sniff it before petting the dog.

* Leave a dog alone while it's eating or sleeping and never take away its food.

* Forbear tugging a dog's tail or ears, teasing it, or squeezing it too hard.
