Well since our ancestors had to hunt to survive and feed their children, (and before you say let them eat grass note in Northern countries many months of the year you go find the grass buddy)....well I do not find hunting a spineless venture. Anyone who has actually hunted know that it is dangerous. You go try killing a moose with a gun and hit him in the wrong place..note this event occurs during rutting season when these animals are at their most dangerous....there are many a dead hunter from times past with many types of animals....one example- eskimos and whaling...note they lacked fire in many places too so they ate it raw...well rather than go on -all I will say is that when you put animals before feeding your starving children...and if your ancestors would have been so foolish...well many humans would not be here....
and before I hear the word Vegan...note children need B vitamins etc.....and can't be Vegans prior to a certain age...also note where Vegetarians are most popular in ancient times were in hot countries that had long lushious growing seasons and ie coconut trees etc....since our culture was long in the Northern realms...this topic is not valid for our ancestors....so I would surmise you who hate hunting and killing animals do not eat any meat...cows are killed for hamburger.....fish are also living creatures....and you do have to kill them to eat them....yes a cow is not a wild animal...but note not many people were rich enough to own one cow little lone a herd and back in those days wolves were plentiful..so herds were an investment one could lose fairly quickly...so wild animals fed most people..note wolves:they ate people too...one wolf in France ate 60 people before it was killed..it may have had one wolf as helper according to some villages but in the end only one wolf was killed..yup...true story...the latest incident of wolves packing up and killing humans happened in Northern Russia in the 1920's....they were spotted from the air by Russian military planes ....by the time they sent troops to help the village... many villagers had been eaten...the wolves even learned to knock down the doors of the wooden houses....yes...killing animals for sport is one thing but putting an animal before the life of a human....well you probably would from what you say....I hope not.
