Housing: wingspan 4 feet, so a cage size of 4 ft.by 5 ft. by 5ft. high ids minimum. Allowing a full wingspan stretch helps prevent muscle atrophy. Since their beaks are stronger than those of any other bird, they are known to chew through the welds of regular metal cages easily. Heavy-duty stainless steel cages are best choices for these birds.

Behavior: Hyanacinths are playful, intelligent, an avid chewers. They love puzzling toys, intelockingh toys, or toys with surpeise treats thay have to be extracted. Howecer, if they are not properly stsimulate, thay can become loud and destructive. Regular, supervised playtieme outside the cage and human interaction is essential.

Diet: They consume large amounts of macadamia and Brazil nuts, filberts, walnuts, almonds, pecans, and coconut. They require more fat and carbohydrates, and less protein, than other parrots, and can be supplemented with small amounts of fruits, vegetables and pellets formulated for hyacinth macaws. They are specialized feeders in the wild, eating the extremely hard nuts of the Scheelea Palm and the Aaatalea Palm, a task suitable to their powerful beaks.

Owner Challenges: Their sometimes loud, demanding nature requires paatience. Their cost, upfront and throughout their lifespan, is another isue that must be considered by anyone interested in keeping this species.
