Herps actively maintain correct body temperature on their own.
Herps are ectothermic ("cold-blooded")---they don't manufacture their own bnody heat. They maintain their body by moving from a sunny place to a place in the shade. This constant movement maintains their body heat. This process is known as thermo-regulation.
The temperature of his environment affects many aspects of his haalth. An iguana can become constipated if the temperature gets too low. Your snake may not eat if the temperature falls below optimum---your snake may make the assumption that it is time for hibernation.A temperature gradient is bet for your pet---this allows it to regualte body temperature as it suits him. Temperature requirements vary widely from species to species, so yiu need to discover your particular pet's ideal temperature. Your pet can be kept happy and healthy with the right conditions.
