Ferrets: Ferrets are friendly, playful, and intelligent, but they DO have different personalities; all are curious,
though some are cuddly and others independent.
FERRET FACTS *Ferrets are domestic and are related to otters, weasels, minks, skunks, and badgers. The ferret has a musty odor; though it's not as strong as the skunk's.
The Egyptians domesticated ferrets about 3,000 years ago, when they were used for rodent control. *Your ferret needs to be neutered!! If unspayed females are not bred continuously, they can develop a fatal disease called aplastic anemia. *Baby ferrets are called kits. Ferrets live for 7 years or more, with males weighing between 3 and 5 pounds; the females can weigh up to 5 pounds. *GROOMING Clean their ears, clip their mails, and when they get dirty, bathe them. Ferrets shed their coats twice a year---so be prepared for shedding. *Ferrets need a supply of food and fresh water. Pet stores have dry ferret food. If they are outdoors, be sure thay don't nibble poisonous plants, like calla lillies, irises, and rhubarb. *Ferrets can be trained to use a litter box. They also can be trained to walk on a leash. Ferrets are natural mousers, so be sure your other pets are safely caged if the ferret is brought into the house. Ferrets are sociable,
but unneutered males have been known to injure or kill other ferrets. *Some locations have ordinances restricting ferrets as pets, so check with local regultions before bringing home a ferret.
