Fausto!!

You like Jorge Luis Borges...too?
PRG Thanks. I've put Zahuri, Cuahtemoc and Fausto on the list to check with my daughter, who is coming home this weekend for a little holiday. (She's studying to be a nurse-practioner in San Francisco.)

I like the idea of the Nahuat names. A lot of them are long... Huitzilopochtli and Tezcatlipoca are longer than the dog himself. I'm tickled by the image of myself roaring these powerful, blood drenched names into the undergrowth, and then to see a tiny white panting pixie emerge. Both of these names appeal to my sense of humor, only I don't think they'll get past the committee. But I do like the name Tepin, which means Little One.

I was much influenced by Borges in my younger days when I was toying with writing, and I still am.. It's too bad he is not particularly popular in the US, but not surprising.

Another Borges fan

If you like Borges, you might enjoy this ‘spoof’ by the Brazilian writer Luis Fernando Verissimo: Borges and the Eternal Orang Utans

It’s only short, and quite amusing, but if you know Borge’s books well, you well get lot out of it and appreciate some of the ‘in’ jokes.

Opps, this was supposed to be about pets wasn’t it…

in that case, check out this site: The Infinite Cat Project.

As a cat lover himself, this is just the sort of site I amsure Borges would approve- and with a very Borgesian theme

Thanks. Just ordered it on Amazon. Sounds like a riot. I love literary spoofs -- if they work.

Now about those pets....

You will enjoy it, but it is over too soon

Have you read any Italo Calvino ? Just wondered as you like Borges- and he shares certain similarities.

Now, on the the vexing question of CATS.

I am about to take ownership of two black kittens (8 weeks old) and I need some help with names...any suggestions ?

No, no Calvino as yet. I normally order my Amazon books in huddles of three or four to save on postage, so I'll factor one in next time.

Names for two black cats? You honor me, sir. I'll get back to you, for I still hae a couple of hours of work to get through.

Have you had pets before, and what did you name them? Pet names say a lot about the owner, I say. I'm always intrigued by people who insist on the spelling of their pet's name, as in. "We call her Poupee, spelled P-O-U..."

Jasper and sg,

I am glad you are considering various names....cachito is a good name for a little dog...it means little bit in Spanish.

As for the little kittens....for Jasper...Moro and Cid would be good names...one means "Moor" and the other "Cid" as for El Cid...lol. Or you can call them Prieto, and Morena...or Gitana...and Fandango...lol. I love to play with names...my husband lets me choose names for everything...

Both of you are Borges fans...lol. I should have known you loved literature sg. The way you write is a person who loves literature...I wrote a little vignette...totally spontaneous about my early childhood with my grandmother...I will look it up for you...you can read it and see if it is any good. Lol. I am going to enjoy both of you a whole lot...I can tell.

Let's see....a fru-fru name in French for a kitten...chou-chou....is a good one. Lol. I named an orange tabby I had once Fidel...and the pretty little long haired Siamese girl cat...Lolita...after the novel. Fidel was so adorable and fun to have that a neighbor cried and beg to let her keep him as her cat. And Lolita I gave to a friend with a big backyard when we moved to an apartment when I was studying...

How I love dogs and cats.

Congrats sgriobhadair on the new addition to the family!
And I must say yay! for you adopting from a shelter! As a shelter volunteer, its great to see someone actually go to a shelter to adopt rather than surrender an animal!

Jasper congrats to you too on the new additions!... are the two kitties male or female? I always like to wait and see the personality of the cat/dog I adopt before naming them. I'm a sucker for black cats.. have three adults and one black 9 week old kitten (amongst others) here at the house. Kitty names that I like.... Shadow.. Onyx.. Inka..
