sg....

I have the most wonderful dog in the world. He is an Old English Sheepdog purebred. His name is Borges Ajedrez...the only OES in his line with a Spanish name. Lol. Anyway, I want to travel with him to Mexico and to DR and want to know if he will suffer in the heat if I get him shaved down....he does well in the colder months...and in the summer he doesn't like it. My husband spoils him terribly....he is big for his breed...and adored. And he won best overall dog in his doggie obedience class...and best of all...he understands in both Spanish and English. Lol. Its true I am not lying about that part.

Borges, I get. But Ajedrez. what does that mean?

I've been dogless for two years. Boris the JRT died of old age, shortly after Kifli the Viszla. I'm probably abopting another Jack Russell on the weekend. (I say 'probably' but I can't imagine myself leaving the pound without him. My wife is already snorting when I say probably. She knows me well.)

Nice to know that you, like most passionate and intellectual people, have a soft spot for dogs.

Wink

sg....
The Jack Russell Terriers are very active little creatures and need a firm hand and training for their bursting energy levels.

Borges' first name is for my husband's favorite writer Jorge Luis Borges from Argentina, (who among other things has the face in his old age of an OES in my opinion). Ajedrez seemed appropriate as a middle name. Lol. First because of the color of the pup when we first got him seven years ago of black and white..and later when he matured he is a grizzled gray with white...like my husband's favorite game. Chess...chess is called "ajedrez" in Spanish. So we got his favorite writer in the Spanish language Borges, and his favorite game in the name...Borges also shares my birthdate with me. Lol. We knew he was destined for us...

His favorite treats are any kind of fish, but mostly salmon, gouda cheese, and he loves roasted pork...especially Christmas roasted pork with all the Puerto Rican trimmings...lol. He likes chocolate too....I don't let him eat it...it is toxic for dogs...but my husband was Christmas shopping once...and left him in a van with the windows open, and with a box of Ferrero Rocher chocolates....and when he came back the individually packed little chocolate truffles with hazelnut filling wrapped in aluminum gold foils were consumed...I don't know how Borges did it but he had unwrapped delicately the truffles from their foils and ate them all one by one....all over the van floor he left the wrappers and his long OES beard was full of chocolate. I keep it away from him. The rascal!!

He starts barking and jumping excitedly...with Salsa music...he likes Jerry Rivera and Willie Colon and Celia Cruz...and his favorite seems to be Tito Puente....Lol.

Dogs are beautiful...and special creatures...aren't they?

Oh, sg, we live in a neighborhood with a lot of small Mexican children...and they all call him and say to us in Spanish...."El perro grandote peludo consentido donde esta?" it means, "The big fluffy hairy dog that is spoiled rotten where is he?"

Wonderful! I'm a Borges fan too, and when I was younger I used to play a lot of chess. Sorry, I speak English, Scots, French, some Turkish and have been learning Gaelic for a few years. No Spanish, though my older kid is fluent on paper.

Jack Russells are insane and I'm totally hooked on them. The new adoptee already has a name -- Trevor. I think it's hilarious because it's such a wet, geeky name, but my daughters hate it. Now we're trying to come up with a name that has more dignity and SOUNDS a bit like Trevor. He's two years old, so it won't be like starting from scratch. I think Gregor might work. At least it's a Scottish name. Any ideas? Any Spanish names that sound vaguely like Trevor?

Well sg,

My neighbor who is a reposesser of vehicles for a living guy is named Trevor. Lol. For that alone, I wouldn't name the new member of the family that...lol.

Let's see something in Spanish for a fast and energetic...Jack Russell Terrier?

Veloz= Speedy is a good name...

Zahuri=which means an incredibly uncontrollable little thing...

Tlaloc= which is the Rain God in the Aztec canon of gods....and he is swift and furious...lol.

Cuahtemoc=flying double eagle in Nahuatl..the Aztec language...and the name of the most famous warrior who fought the Spaniards til his last breath...lol. A bit much to pronounce for a little terrier...

I know what is perfect!!

Fausto!! Yes....just like the fine dancer Nijinski once performed entranced by this woodland creature filled with enchantment and energy that he lost control on stage and went nuts...it is good for a dog....FAUSTO. And it sounds like Fast...in English too....pronounced....FAA-UUS-TOH. But, it is up to you ofcourse on the name...

You like Jorge Luis Borges...too? He once said..."Basta que sea un ser humano para que no me guste..." when someone asked him if he was prejudiced against Black people...the reply was typically Borges...."It is enough that someone is human for me not to like them." Lol. He liked animals alot too...and lived for books. To him paradise was composed of a library and all the time in the world to read all the books...

Your daughters are very lucky to have such a father as you sg...
