when i was in scotland a friend of mine (who is german) did this. she had to have a ton of paper work and had to have micro chips put into her cats - she drove from germany, and the only place she could bring the cats across was in dover, so she ended up having to drive quite a but out of her way instead of just taking the ferry from edinburgh over to the mainland.

the microchip thing gets injected behind the cats ear i think - i think she said it was so if they got lost they could be scanned and then identified. not sure if that was a requirement of bringing the cat over, or if she did it because she wanted to.

It's pretty much universal here in the States. We're trying to adopt a new Jack Russell, and all the dogs up for adoption are microchipped.

The vet injects a tiny computer chip (size of a grain of rice) between Rover's shoulder blades. The number of the chip is registered with an international database. If your dog goes missing, and turns up at any animal hospital, shelter, or humane society, the folks there can read the ID number with a scanner. The database can then supply your address and phone number.

Sounds like something out of the Matrix, I know. But I never heard of any negative effects, just tearful reunions with much tail wagging and french kissing.

pet passport

Forgot to mention: Cost in the UK is about 25 quid per animal. We don't chip our cats, because they have a history of hooking up with the wrong types of canines. We have lost no fewer than five cats and one rabbit to coyotes in the past six years. The current cat has lasted longest, but she is looking increasingly shell-shocked.

I'd be curious to hear any US stories about keeping coyotes away from pets.
