It seems those three questions can't have an outright answer, but rather opinions, people may have different answers.

IMO animal testing should be restricted to the pharmaceutical sector. There's no use in testing animals for cosmetics or washing powder or any of the other things you mentioned.

Animal testing starts after extended research using cell cultures and computers (and exchanging results with other pharmaceutical companies). Besides it's not that the companies love to do it ... they have to. The law demands that any new medicine has to be tested on animals before it can be tested on human volunteers (at least in Germany and as far as I know in the UK too).

For the 3rd question: Well, first of all we'd had to change the law. However, depending on their stage of e. g. cancer I assume a lot of patients would be willing to try a new medicine (that wasn't tested on animals). In general humans rank before animals ... and this goes for most countries. But then again, testing new medicine on humans could be taken as a breach of ethics (of doctors).

Eventually we come to the question: Would any of us volunteer for a new medicine? Or if we had cancer, would we refuse to have the treatment because the medicine we need and which could save our lives was tested on animals?

For sure we need to reduce it to a minium but we can't omit animal testing completly.

I fear that I hold no opposing view to you so my answers will shed no light, nor opposition...

1) I do not accept that animal testing is necessary to save human lives, and if it is beyond the realms of my knowledge, then I submit that as long as its not for advancement in makeup or other means of beautifying ourselves then it may be more accepted, though I still wonder as to its moral cost.

2) Business is all about saving money, its the nature of the sad world we live in. Only if the alternative makes good business sense will it ever be pursued.

3) I agree completely, but there would be those that would oppose the testing of human subjects especially if there is a chance of reducing their life span initially in the testing...

I think animals should only be killed for one thing. That's food. Although, i would't mind using an animal to make a leather couch or something, as long as the animal was eaten.

Why? There are alternatives to that as well! Eat more veggies!

Well maybe I someone who is in research reads this then they can try to justify it the use of animals. Everyone will have their own ideas but its answers I would like to see with valid reasons why they should be used (which may never come).

I'm not a vegan, who thinks killing animals is wrong. Although, i do believe alot are killed for the wrong reasons. Look at the animal kingdom, there not sick ****s. They kill for food, or to defend themselves.
