Donkey---Nickname for members of the ass family (Equius asinus)
Jack, Jackass, Jack Ass---The male of the ass family Jennet or Jenny---Female of the ass family Burro---Small members of the ass family from Mexican and Spanish stock, native to the Southwest, but not widespread. Mammoth Jack/Jennet---Large members (measuring 14 hands or more) of the ass family used for draft mule production. Mule---A cross between a male ass (jack) and a female horse (mare). Hinny---A cross between a male horse (stallion) and a female donkey. DONKEY LOWDOWN---Domestic donkeys come in four sizes. Miniature donkeys are less then nine hands (36 inches) at the withers when fully grown. Standard donkeys are over nine but under 12 hands (36 to 48 inches), large standard donkeys are 12 to 14 hands (48 to 52 inches) and mammoth donkeys are at least 14 hands (over 56 inches). |

![]() Y'know... I really had misgivings about submitting this post, then thought I would. This will really display my ignorance, but, are these animals in the UK? Surly there are. Mules, though awkward looking, are admirable animals; and donkeys/burros are SO "cuddly"... [Edited by Texasmujer on 16th May 2004 at 21:17] |

Yeah, these animals are sterile, so they cannot breed with others of their line..."cross" refers to a "mix". I forget that, even though you and I speak the same basic language (or, something like it), there are differences...I know that this sometimes leads to mis-understandings, and not getting jokes, etc., but, overall, it's workable...
(with some effort and cooperation) ( a sense of humor doesn't hurt, either)
