OHhhh...I've never had a pet die in front of me...how old is your little one? It must be hard to explain when a pet dies. 'wish I had some experience so I could tell you what 'worked' for me, but I don't. 'Sorry. (When my daughter had a hamster, and it became sick, I felt compelled to have it treated, do she wouldn't get the idea that we just throw animals away; this cost me a lot of money, but, when you try to give children solid ideas...Parenting is SO challenging!) children are so resilient---Thank Heavens!
