are horses cheap

I've got one in the pasture! He watches and watches untill he sees someone come out of the house then he sounds his alarm which then translates to 'FEED ME I AM STARVING TO DEATH!'

Got another one who would bother the bad guys so much they would run! Not naughty bothering but 'pet me' bothering and 'what's in your pocket/hand' bothering, and 'can I taste that' bothering!

No, they don't make a good pets and this BS about unconditional love that Hollywood has encouraged is a load of road apples!

Horses are not cheap, not even when you are set up to have them, have the equipment for them and the means to feed them. I get my shoeing free, as I married the shoer, but it would cost me around $75.00 to have one done. Hay here is $80-100.00 per ton, and you have to have a place to store it. Grain or C.O.B., which we feed, is 10.00 per $40 lb bag and my 5 can storm through 40 lbs in a weekend! Pigs!!!!! LOL My hubby spent $2300.00 on a new saddle, he saved for 3 years to get this and needed it as he rides colts, you can't ride colts in cheap stuff, or you are asking for trouble. A decent cheap saddle will run you $500-1000. Then the price of the critter themself, you can get a cheap horse, but I bet there is a really GOOD reason it's cheap! Mostly the cheap ones aren't worth the food they need! Kickers, biters, bad habbits, hard mouthed, old, navicular, spavined, ring boned, colicy.... some of these things you can't even see. Horses around here, that are any good, start at $1500.00. Getting the West Nile Virus jabs this weekend and it will run us about $20.00 per horse. Not to mention all the other vaccinations they need, the worming meds which can be another $20.00 per horse and you must rotate every few months as the worms will build an immunity. Contrairy to more Hollywood fiction, most horses don't like being cooped up in a stall untill you are ready to play with them and go bonkers. You need room for them to roam around, you need grass for them to graze, you need space. That means good fences, which require maintenance. Want to take the horse places? Trailor and truck, more money, places to ride? At least in the States, here anyway, if you plan to ride in the mountians, requires the purchas of a wilderness use permit.

Then there is the whole load of everyone who has advice for you to listen to!!!! LOL

If you've got a horse or intend to get one, USE IT or it's worthless!

But oh my goodness....there's one horse that lives in my heart and brings a tear to my eye every time I see a film clip of him...SECRETARIAT!

A massive horse with a great personality and a gentle nature.

Seabiscuit, Man-O-War, Affirmed, John Henry...all great horses, but Secretariat will forever be my favorite.

...Secretariat was just a wonderful horse. Go to: http://www.secretariat.com/ Look at the picture of him running the race. Try and see the rest of the horses...you can barely find them because at that race, Secretariat was running 31 lenghts AHEAD! In fact he was so far ahead, that he looked as though he was dead last.

Anyway, this is a good site for you to browse through. BTW: VCI has http://www.horseracing.com. I told the owner to get that site spruced up before the Kentucky Derby which I believe is the first Saturday in May.
