Interesting subject this one. My daughter wanted to get her tongue pierced, so I thought about it, and it didn't seem to me that it was a necessary indulgence, but I told her I'd think about it. I did agree to allow her to do it if she waited a year and a day. She did, still wanted it done, and I kept my end of the bargain. She hasn't had a bit of trouble with it. Further (on the tongue piercing) while some may get it done for more (ahem...)erotic reasons, at thirteen, she was doing it because her friends were and she thought it was "cool". They grow out of these things, and done under the right circumstances (professionally) the risk is minimal. Therefore, no harm done.
Last year I had my nipples pierced. That HURT! but the results were just as I had heard they would be. Increased sensitivity, blah blah blah. However, I took them out for an annual mammogram, and due to a small (size of a quarter) spot just under the lymph node, I left them out for the follow up mammogram two weeks later, and just never put them back in. The spot was benign, by the way.
Tattoes...I have a tiger on one breast, a unicorn on one hip, a phoenix on the other hip, a tribal vine from shoulder, over one breast, under the other breast, across my belly, and down my thigh...where, upon completion of the color, I will have the dragon!
I maintain that body art is a personal choice, and while I don't agree with all of it, I do respect the right of each individual to make their own choices.
