Now a lot of people have mentioned about tats "not coming off when you're bored of them" or whatever. That's a fair point. You have to be certain of what you want and know that you'll be happy with it for the rest of your life. It may seem over the top, but it took me just under 6 years before I finally settled on my one. I knew I wanted one of a crow since I was 16, but I could never decide what sort of style. Then I found the kanji for it (That's what karasu means: crow) and knew instantly that that's what I wanted.

The danger of choosing something you're not happy with is pretty bad. My friend Keith got one when he was 17 and now hates it and does his best to keep it hidden. That's pretty sad, neh?

Now for a wee amusing story of tattoos.

I remember hearing about this couple back in the '60s. He was a tattooist and for every special event that occured in their lives he would do a wee tattoo on his girlfriend (later wife). One of the ones that he did was a gorgeous Mona Lisa on her thigh. Must've been something to look at; a gorgeously rendered tat on a slim, young 20 y/o's thigh. Now 30 years and three kids later; Mona's now grinning from ear to ear!

Don't know if it's true or not, but it is believable. I think that's why my mum waited until she was older to get hers done.

Mata ne, Karasu.

Karasu- lol- a fat Mona Lisa!

Another funny story - in the UK in the seventies, around the time of the 'punk era',there was a musical fashion called 'Oi'.They were basically skinheads, mostly pretty stupid, with a preference for having a dotted line and pair of scissors tattooed around their necks, with the words "cut here" next to it.I remember seeing, about ten years after this fashion had died,a guy working in a bank with that very tattoo still clearly visible just above his collar. How he must have wished he could undo that move!

J-J: Nice. I like that one. You've reminded me of my other tat story as it involves punks.

Picture if you will a young skinhead punk back in the '70's. He decides to get a spiders web tattooed all over his head. Pretty good work all in all. The years pass. He's settled down, grown his hair over the tattoo, married a woman, has had kids and is settled down as an accountant. Can you guess what comes next? I'm sure you can. Yup, he starts to go bald. Poor bugger. Lots of long and expensive painful laser removal.

So with all these stories; anyone scared off? Don't be, just be reasonably sensible when you go to get your tat.

Mata ne, Karasu.

Yeah the spider web was big with the oi community too as i remember.A lot of them had it right across their face- that's gotta hurt! And is the laser treatment 100% successful;or would it leave a spider web pattern of scar tissue?

Wink

Hmmmmmm tattoos vs body peircings. Well my 24 year old nehpew was debating this issue (much to his mother's dismay). I told him get something peirced - at least when you get tired of it, you simply take it out and it grows over. I have my ears peirced, but no tattoos. I have considered it on occasion, but rejected it because I couldn't think of anything that I wanted to see painted on my body for the next 50 years. Considered other peircings on occasion, but man alive those look they they hurt!!

more power to anyone who wants them though. LOL
