The books to which you refer are often called 'bodice-rippers' here in the UK - crappy books, written about our historical past, but with little or no knowledge of the styles, the culture and the norms of the period they write about... We often use the phrase 'heroes striding through the heather, with woad painted on their faces' about those novels.... I've yet to bother reading one of them!
Most are written by sad, American authors, who know nothing about our country!

I took some friends from Florida around the highlands a couple of times (Oct 2009 & May 2010), went up through Glencoe, Fort William, Glenfinnan, Isle of Skye, Applecross, Nairn, Stirling and Edinburgh. If you visit Edinburgh, I'd recommend the Dovecot B&B in Corstorphine.
