I had an interesting thing happen to me while getting a hair cut this morning. While trimming away my stylist said, "You must have some Scotch (notice she said Scotch instead of Scots) or Irish in you somewhere...". I asked her why she made the comment and she replied that it was because of the amount of hair and the different colors of reds, browns, and blacks. So I got to thinking, what would make her choose Scottish or Irish instead of Germanic, etc.? What are some of the characteristics in people that make others automatically assume that they are a genetic make-up of one particular people? You always hear that a person with red hair, freckles, and blue/green eyes must have a fierce Irish temper...and I have heard that people with reddish brown hair, fair skin, brown eyes and terribles tempers have Scottish blood in them. There is also the typical branding of the good 'ol Irish drinker or Scotsman and his wee dram of whiskey among others. Irish people are portrayed as always being light-hearted and jovial, German are seen as argumentive (my mother-in-law is German and she always says, "The Germans love a good argument." so that is coming straight from a German.), there is the stiff-upper lipped English, and many other phrases. Where do you suppose these little lables come from? Why were they given to each particular group of people? I'm just curious as to what you think---and since we are in a Scottish forum, how would you describe yourselves as Scots? Would you agree or disagree as to how others perceive you?

I am not sure about physical characteristics as we are all very different I look nothing like my sister we are the complete opposites, but both of us are told we are very Scottish looking? We can't figure that one out.

Since I moved away from Scotland I have encountered some people with funny impressions of Scots

1st off we are suppost to be tight with money
(LOL I have the very loose money strings I spend it on everyone else esp my nephews)

2nd Scots are suppost to run around in Kilts all the time
(I don't remember seeing that many kilts unless it was a special occasion or a wedding)

3rd We are suppost to drink nothing but whisky and drink it by the gallon (while I really do enjoy whisky I am not limited to whisky alone My ex's family were Greek Cypriots and they drink more whisky than anyone I know )

4th Scots are all football mad and that there are only two teams in Scotland Rangers and Celtic
(I think it is Celyn who hates The F word, which proves that wrong ...LOL ... and we all I hope know there is more to Scotland than that. I can't remember whom it was that described Football in Scotland as a Social Virus that hits within 24hours turning sane men into madmen sometimes with lasting results, in worse case scenario turning rational people into fanatics)

5th this is a quote I read somewhere but do like it
'The Scots can be dour but equally they can flash with inspiration. They delight in Self-deprecating humour.... They are a gregarious people and thoroughly enjoy meeting people from all over the world' not for the masses but it does describe some of my family, the only problem is that I have lost the link of the site I got that from

6th we all learn to play the bagpipes at school...
I did laugh my self-silly at that one

7th I overheard in the pub the other night so I hope no one is offended by it (I was as it was said in Irish bar!)
" The Scots and the Irish are all the bloody same, they are only patriotic once the leave their homes"

I miss my home though I do love where I am at the moment but that was the only bad comment about the Scots that I have ever heard.

End of novel

I didn't honestly mean to write all that, I hope I don't put anyone to sleep

Talisker! You're back! I missed you.

Perhaps if redheads have hotter tempers it's because they feel more pain. Apparently the gene that gives red hair really does cause people to feel more pain... don't ask me how! I have no idea how scientists figured that one out (or if they all looked like Ron Howard).

Scots are often accused of being penny-pinching. I never accept any of these "conventional wisdoms" until i see proof, but i was reading in a book titled, "The Millionaire Next Door," in which two PhD's did extensive demographic research on American millionaires. Part of their research included ethnicity. They found that the largest portion of American millionaires had Russian heritage, and the second largest ethnic group among millionaires were the Scottish. However, they pointed out that the Scottish-Americans were different from every other ethnic group in that though their net worths were quite high, their incomes were significantly lower than other ethnic groups. In other words, proof positive at least for Scottish-Americans, they are indeed significantly more thrifty. In addition they found that unlike other ethnic groups, the Scottish-Americans were far more likely to pass on their wealth-building talents to their children. Children of other non-Scottish millionaires are more inclined to be spendthrift. Personally, i think thrift is a smart trait to have.

What i feel is important to remember is nationalities may have characteristics (like flavors) but an individual can be anything, even the complete opposite of their national culture!

I've not heard of the Scots being tight with money, however in comparison with Americans I think that Europeans hold onto their money more so.

I think the issue with sports is the same all around. You have the fanatics and the spectators everywhere.

Regarding the bagpipes...yes, I would have to laugh at that one too! LOL!

I suppose it would depend on ones view on patriotism. An example would be during the Revolutionary War in America there were quite a few Scots (though not all) who, when the war broke out, were in support of King George. Yet they came here beforehand to escape his tyranny...I never did understand that one.
