Are there any Stephen's left in Edinburgh or
Abereen. My great grandfather, John Stephen, had a tailor shop at 34 St. Enoch's Square for 30 years, this could be in Glascow. He was born in 1841.Still living in Glascow at age 73, after which he came to America. Thank you.

Gail,

St. Enoch's Square IS in Glasgow. It's mightily changed since even the 1960s let alone 1840s! The more information you can give the better. There are literally hundreds of 'Stephens' in both Edinburgh and Aberdeen.

Thanks, Drummy. I do have more info and will send more perhaps tomorrow (Sat the 15th. I take it you are not a 'Stephen'--please note there is no 's' on the end of our name. Do you play drums, hence the name Drummy? My dad played the bass drum in a bagpipe band in Connecticut some years ago-most of the members newly here from Scotland.

Greetings, Drummy. Thanks again for your reply. Here is more info-don't know if it will help, but it is all I have. John Stephen married ? in either Banff,Turrif or Foggie Lane, maybe around 1860. They were both from Aberdeenshire. Had 11 children, one of whom (James) joined the 42nd highlanders in 1897, was sent to Ramsey Block, Maryhill Barracks, Glascow (bandmember)eventually deserted and joined the Naval Brigade under the name of John Innes, perhaps serving 6 mos. He was also a choirboy at St. Brides, Crossloan Rd, Kelvinside for 1 1/2 years. Moved to Canada, then to USA. I have more info on James, because he wrote a book, but was not much on family history. Looking to hear from you again.

Gail,

No, I don't play the drums! My first name is Drummond hence the shortened version.
