Helen, born 1.7.54
Looking for my half sister, born in Glasgow on 1st July, 1954, named Helen Dolores S****** and adopted very soon after birth. Am registered with Birth Link in Scotland and have left messages on as many boards as I can find. Have also written to various adoption agencies of the time but am running out of ideas. Any suggestions, please - or anyone with knowledge of someone with the above birthday?

Most cities and major towns in the UK have Citizen Advice Bureaus. If you don’t live in the UK yourself perhaps someone living near one of those could have the goodness to make enquiries as to how to go about tracing a lost sibling.
There must be some procedure one can follow, or if it is not possible they could tell one why. All the best with your search and I hope you are successful. Best of luck. |

Sister, I assume you've already tried "Scotland's People" for this. A couple of sites worth a try are, Glasgow & West of Scotland Family History Society, and particularly helpfull is the Mitchell Library,Glasgow. They have a site called "Virtual Mitchell" but I would write to them in the first instance. The Mitchell Library, Family History Department, North Street, Glasgow, G3.

Wullie,
I think the good sister is looking for someone who has been adopted soon after birth. Genealogy and family history organisations would not normally have access to information that would help in this case, not least because it is fairly recent and those involved are possibly, hopefully, still living. There are secrecy and confidentiality issues involved here as well Might be helpful to know where the sister (the one who wrote this post) is from and the surname before and/or after adoption of the one that is lost. She has give a DOB. and a place of birth, Glasgow Would the Registry Office give out any details, they shoud know if anything has been recorded? |

Sister, the Registry Offices come under the aegis of "Scotland's People", as you'll already know if you've already taken the obvious route. Try the Mitchell for advice, if you are no further forward, have you thought of a private researcher! I could give you a steer to that, no idea as to her charges, I expect reasonable. wullie m

Thank you, wullie and Crofter. Have not heard of the Mitchell Library, so will certainly contact them but, of course, this is not strictly a family history matter. I am just trying to cover every possibility. Thanks so much for your interest and suggestions.

If you haven't already done so, write to Glasgow City Council - it may still hold adoption records from then. You won't get the whole set of information in them but they may be able to give you something to extend your search with. Good luck with your search. However, if you do trace her whereabouts, do be prepared for her not wanting to meet you. Just because you are looking, doesn't mean that she feels the same way.
