Hello, how are you? I am a 4th generation American of Scotch and English ancestry. My maternal Great Grandfather came from Scotland, namely THOMAS MCGEACHEN, before 1888. He married AGNES MCKENZIE CRAIG, also of Scotland. Both emigrated to the US before 1888, when they married in New Jersey USA. She descended from THOMAS CRAIG 3 generations back (sorry, no dates or further info.) On my father's side, I descended from WILLIAM KENNEDY, who came to the US after 1688. Unfortunately I have no record of what counties any of these folks came from. SIR ANTHONY DE TIPTON, circa 1260, is also in my father's lineage. The first Tipton in the US was JONATHAN TIPTON, born in Shropshire England around 1639. I'm looking for a penpal from any of these these families, or from someone who knows about them. A little about me: I'm a MWF with a 12 year old child, working in mental health research, who loves a good joke, good weather, music, reading, cooking, and more and more, history. I'll furnish my email address after I hear from you. Thanks so much, and I hope to hear from you soon! Sincerely, Meg

McGeachen ,Craig Marriage
Hello Meg!
How surprised I was to see Thomas McGeachen and his wife Agnes Craig! It so happens that my grandfather's father and mother were those persons. My grandfather, Campbell, was born in 1892 in Newark, NJ. My father is Robert McGeachen, born in 1927 in Newark, N.J. I just recently sent for a copy of my grandfather's social security number application, so that I could find out what his parents names were. No one seemed to know that. I found that the persons above were his parents. I know nothing else of their birth dates, or when they were married. I am digging into many resources to find a little info, but it is time consuming. I arrive at work early to use the computer at work. We've not yet purchased a computer. I never felt it was necessary, since I have one to use at work . Now I find I am using it quite a lot, since I've been digging up bones. I would very much like to chat with you, since we do have a bit in common. I live in New Jersey, I have some history on some of the McGeachens. I will have to put it all together, so that it makes sense. If you are interested, I would certainly like to discuss anything about the family that might help you out. I may not answer right away, since I only get on the net during the week, but I certainly will get back to you. As with your post, I will furnish my email address, after I hear from you. Have a great day, and looking forward to your reply, Linda |

I am so glad to hear from you! There's no doubt that we're related. I knew your father, I met him once at Uncle Billy's house when we visited NJ. My mother was Agnes Mary (Sue) (McGeachen) Tipton, daughter of Thomas McGeachen. Was your mother my Aunt Margaret? She died just before I was born, in a car accident. Please email me at tipkendundot@aol.com, I'd love to talk more! Looking fwd to it, Meg

Meg, My wife's maternal grandmother was Evelyn Henrietta Tipton born in 1916 in Atkison County, MO. She is currently doing some research and running into walls with reference to the Tiptons in the US. Her aunt also has a a considerable amount of information on the Tiptons. I'll e-mail my wife a link to this site. Between herself and her aunt they may have information that would help you. Best wishes.

jjolly, I may be able to help you with Tiptons before they moved west to MO. Does your mother have access to any of the Tipton books by either Charles Tipton (who seems to have the most documentation), Rev. Ervin C. Tipton (who has volumes of info, but not all substantiated), and the Moorehead KY branch of Tiptons?
toribrown, my Kennedy roots don't run through NJ; unfortunately I don't know much about the NJ branch. However, there is a Kennedy (Canady) Family Association that may be able to help. Their address is Kennedy Society of America, Att'n Bernice Canaday, 520 Harrison Ave., Cambridge OH 43725-1472. I was fortunate do discover a goldmine of info through the DAR records filed in the Eastern Kentucky University genealogy library by a distant cousin; it traced the family back several generations and led me to discover the colorful history of the Kennedy family in KY. Good luck to you and sorry I couldn't be of more assistance. |
