Thumbs down who ask you anyway!!!!!!!!!!!bell-the-cat

FIRST OF ALL IT IS NOT A OBSESSION, ONE HAS TO START WITH A NAME THEN GO FROM THERE TO A REGION, TO FIND THE FAMILY ONE IS LOOKING FOR, FOR THOSE OF US THAT HAVE DESCENDENTS FROM OTHER PLACES THEN WERE WE LIVE IT IS FUN TO FIND OUT ABOUT THEM AND THIER WAY OF LIFE, AS FOR ME I LOVE HISTORY AND BY DOING GENEALOGY I HAVE FOUND MANY INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT SCOTLAND AND RUSSIA THE COUNTRYS MY FAMILY COME FROM. DIFFERENT ETHNIC GROUPS APPARENTLY RESEARCH DIFFERENTLY IN THEIR COUNTRY.AS YOU ARE AWARE AMERICA IS THE MELTING POT OF THE WORLD. I FIND IT VERY INTERESTING THAT YOU SEEM TO HAVE NEGATIVE ISSUES WITH OTHER WAYS OF RESEARCH. WHATEVER WAY IT IS RESEARCHED I AM THANKFUL FOR THE GIFT OF ANY INFORMATION I CAN FIND ABOUT MY GENEOLOGY WHETHER IT BE HISTORICALLY,REGIONAL OR FAMILY ROOTS. (FYI, THE RAMSAY CLAN FROM THE HOUSE OF DALHOUSIE ) IS MY FAMILY SURNAME DO SOME OF YOUR OWN COUNTRIES RESEARCH ON CLANS AND YOU MIGHT SEE WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT TO ME.

Bell-the-cat

Very interesting post, thank you. I too wondered about the American desire to build an ancestry line, and they stick to a family name as one indicator.

Europeans don't have a need for this concept, first of Europeans are very aware that a shared family name doesn't mean family relationships and secondly they have a vertical awareness of their culture.

To the earlier: having MacDonald or Smith or Martinez as a surname doesn't make one related to all MacDonalds, Smiths, or Martinezes of the world!

To the latter: this is what you describe in saying that for Europeans the birth place and region someone grew up is more important and speaking. The region does not only forge our cultural frame of reference, but also what someone has called forming a vertical knowledge, coming with place names, a knowledge which links us to the past and gives us security in our times.

Many Americans don't have this luxury yet. They are formed and blended from many cultures in one point in the future they will have enough "meat" to build their own vertical awareness. The intensity in which 300 years of American history is taught to pupils speaks for itself.

I hope this helps.

Either Taterjag's "little o'l laptop" has got its caps-lock key broken, or he/she is one of those people who think that their ignorance will be disguised by just SHOUTING all the time.

Jag

no offence but writing in cap letters equals shouting in internat etiquette and every post from you will thus appear to be agressive, even if not intented so. Please consider using small case so people are not appalled by your messages LOOKs choosing rather not to read it closely.
