I know this may not be the best place to ask this question but possibly someone can point me in to the proper site. I anticipate a short holiday in Scotland this summer and needed some info on the attitude towards a gay man and possible places to meet other men of the same mindset. Anyt suggestions.

I would suggest tha you consider the information on the following link.
http://www.gaytimes.co.uk/gt/ This magazine (published in London) has an extensive scene guide which will detail bars, clubs and other things. You can contact them to purchase a proper copy. It also covers more news stories as well. I have never personally experienced any real hostility other than ill informed attitudes. However, the outrageous 'flaunting' of things causes the most upset. I would probably stick to the proper venues advertised as being gay bars, clubs etc in things such as the Gay Times. Resorting to the local open air nocturnal haunts (commonly called Cruising Grounds) is very risky in the extreme. I have known of a few people whom have been attacked because they have been tempted to try the cruising grounds. They seem to attract the local muggers. |

It does appear that many comments on this particular part of the board are either posted in error or are closed down by replies along your lines - it is of no interest to/relevance to GBLT issues/should appear elsewhere. I am coming to the view that this particular forum of this discussion board is here purely to make the owners appear modern and trendy. I would much rather prefer that discussions were allowed to develop. Alternatively if there is an embarrasment about how discussions might develop then maybe this section should be done away with. |

What point?
This member was requesting information. I directed him to another possible place in which to get more info than I can help with, part of the job of a volunteer mod here at s.com. I have even posted a message in the Inn where some may be able to come here and help with their info in case they miss it here. There is no political or moral agenda here. I am moderating the best I can with limited info for a culture I am not familiar with. As to posting in other areas, which you seem to think doesn't happen or is shut down here by MY comments, what is your basis for that? Should you wish to begin posting discussions here and visiting with members who may be interested in what you have to say, go for it. If I or other mods comment and you take issue with that, contact Admin. If you have suggestions for forum development, contact Admin as well. No comment of mine is intended to 'shut things down' unless the discussion deteriorates to violations of the use policy. And if you will take the time to read Ben Nevis' question, he asked to be directed to an area in which to find help for the question regarding attitudes. I would hope that the attitude he or any person encounters here is helpfulness, interest and interaction with ideas. And yes, I was trying to be helpful, because that is what I was asked to do. . . |

Kathyv this was the point I was referring to:
Quote:
1. Bye Bye Union 2. BT Moves the Goal Posts 3. Crack in Unionism 4. Feb 1st is 1st day of spring in Ireland 5. Firearms in Scotland 6. Old Newspapers 7. Bad Lads Army is Back 8. Natural Disasters. I did read Ben Bevis's posting. He was asking about attitudes to Gay men in Scotland and where he might go to meet other Gay men. The GBLT forum seems an appropriate place to be asking for information on this particular subject. Last edited by Peter_Martin; 8th May 2007 at 01:08. |

Ben Nevis - there are thriving & cosmipolitan gay communities in both Edinburgh & Glasgow these days. Other parts of the country can be a bit more low-key/problematic however & many people travel-in from less tolerant parts of the country on a regular basis to participate. Plenty of non-gay folk join-in as well because it is seen as a more civilised & less oppressive alternative to the hard-drinking pub/club/match culture prevalent in many other places & you won't run the risk of getting your head kicked-in for "not being from round here"
In the main cities, you won't have much problem being directed in the right direction by simply asking in the tourist office. Indeed, last time I stayed in the Brunswick in Glasgow, they included a fair amount of scene-info in the room literature & IIRC there are couple of pretty active free network sites that cover the country. Hope you have a good time. |
