Question

Could anyone help? I am looking for any help in obtaining a copy of a photograph printed in a newspaper in Edinburgh and also in Dundee between 1942-1943. The photo was of The Lord Provost Edinburgh standing in front of a Lancaster with a Squadron of the RAF. My uncle, Charles Smith Cook, was one of the men in the photo and I would appreciate any information on how to find a copy of this newspaper photo.Thank you,Tricia

Hi, have you had any luck in finding your photo? You would have to know which newspaper it was printed in originally, perhaps The Scotsman which is an Edinburgh based paper and is still in print today, they have a website so maybe you could contact someone in the archive department.

Thanks for your reply. I have had no luck with any of the papers archive departments. They want to know the exact print date and unfortunately I haven't a clue about that.

Thats a shame, I know it can be very frustrating trying to get exact information about stuff like this. Have you tried searching for information on the squadron itself,(do you know which squadron he was in?) may be that they have old photo's, or send a copy of the picture to a newspaper and someone may recognise it/have a photo etc?? I know it's all a shot in the dark but I would try all of these and more not being the sort of person to give up easily!!! You can find so much on the net so good luck hope you find something.

Did you ever find the photograph??

... but some libraries do carry copies of old newspapers, I believe. You might have to take some time out and sit in the Mitchell Library in Glasgow and sift through the old archives there.

... sorry to bring up an old thread - you might already have found the picture.

Margaret

Smile old photo still not found

thank you for the reply, i have yet to find the photo. Many folk have offered to help look through the library copies of the Dundee papers for me but they have come up with nothing. I even wrote to the Government offices in Edinburgh care of the present Lord Provost to ask if they kept historical photos of Lord Provosts from the past especially World War II photos. no luck again. I live in Canada so my resources are limited to mail and internet.
I am so grateful to those of you who have made the effort to find the photo but I may never find it.
Thanks again.

The Scotsman newspaper's archive from 1817-1950 is available online. You can pay to search every edition published in this period. If I remember rightly you pay for the number of days you want, rather than the number of images looked at.

The Scotsman is published in Edinburgh so it may have carried the photograph.
